Course Description: A Practical Approach to Training Adults is an engaging and powerful two-day workshop that covers current and traditional adult learning theories and practical instructional design and delivery strategies and techniques. This workshop is designed for those who are new adult education trainers or subject matter experts who are assisting with the development of training. This workshop will provide you with basic knowledge, tools, and techniques to immediately enhance your learners’ experiences, expand your abilities to deliver quality learning events, and produce a sound return on investment.
Throughout the two days, you will engage in several dynamic individual, small, and large group activities as well as complete a capstone project and presentation. You will also take away concrete strategies to apply to your own organizations’ continuing education and training (CE/T) programs and experiences.
This workshop content aligns with the ANSI/IACET 1-2018 Standard for Continuing Education and Training. It also prepares instructors and CE/T professionals to support their organizations’ accreditation efforts by providing high-quality learning experiences and programs.
Audience: This basic to intermediate level workshop is ideal for instructors and subject matter experts (SMEs) who help design and deliver training and development programs. It is also appropriate for individuals who are new to the fields of training and development, adult learning, and continuing education.
Delivery Options: This course is offered as a two-day, instructor-led class. The core content can also be customized and delivered on-site based an organization’s unique needs.
Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Explain how instructional design supports the principles of adult learning through:
- Differentiate between "assessment" and "evaluation"
- Develop methods to evaluate the effectiveness of learning events and interventions
- Create an action plan to put new concepts into practice
To successfully complete this course, you must attend the entire course, actively participate, and satisfactorily complete the exercises.
Vanessa Almony has 20 years of experience in all aspects of training and development, with an emphasis on identifying and targeting creative solutions to performance needs. She has extensive experience managing development teams as well as independently producing instructionally sound products that satisfy customers' needs for timely, technically accurate, and cost-effective training that works.
Vanessa has designed, developed, and delivered training products addressing diverse topics such as executive leadership development, medical records confidentiality, and wastewater and drinking water plant operations. For the past ten years, Ms. Almony has focused on producing traditional and virtual classroom training and e-learning packages for federal, state, and municipal transportation engineers.
Vanessa Almony holds an M.Ed. in Training and Development and a B.S. in Behavioral Science. She is a member of the national and Vermont chapters of Association for Talent Development (ATD), Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and the e-learning Guild. She is a Federal Highway Administration/National Highway Institute Master Trainer and an NHI-certified instructor. Vanessa has served as an IACET Commissioner since 2014.

Success in a learning event is dependent on active participation and engagement by the attendee throughout the course. In order to earn a course completion certificate and digital badge for any IACET learning event, attendees are required to fully participate in the training activities, lectures, and discussion. This applies to those attending in-person and remotely. Participation is defined as greater than 90% attendance of the scheduled course time and active engagement verified by the facilitator. Remote participation requires a working webcam and microphone; the webcam must be activated throughout the learning event.
Full refunds are available for cancellations with written notification to email@example.com within 20 days of the event. Refunds of 50% of the registration are available within 10 days of the event. No refund is available 5 days prior to the event due to prepaid expenses on behalf of the participant.
