Micro-credentials are increasingly used to recognise specific skills, competencies, and learning outcomes, but the term is often misunderstood and inconsistently applied. In many cases, micro-credentials are treated as short courses, digital badges, or attendance-based certificates, resulting in credentials that lack credibility, clarity, and real value.

This session provides a clear and structured explanation of what micro-credentials truly are, how they differ from certificates and certifications, and why they matter in today’s evolving learning and workforce landscape. Participants will explore common pitfalls and misalignments in micro-credential design before examining the essential components of a credible micro-credential, including learning outcomes, assessment, and evaluation. Anchored on quality and standards, the session also introduces how micro-credentials can be intentionally designed and aligned with IACET standards. The discussion concludes with a brief micro-credential readiness check to help participants reflect on their current practices and identify practical next steps.
